Detailed Review:

The Marshall Plan Novel Writing Software is a software program based on novelist and literary agent Evan Marshall's best-selling book of the same name. The software gives a very specific and precise template to follow to produce a novel which will, in Mr. Marshall's professional opinion, sell.

The basic premise is that a novel should be broken down into specific sections. There are action sections and reaction sections, and it's very important to deal with these correctly in your novel.

The software is easy to use and intuitive. There are a few little mistakes though in the instructions, or example, in the section on how to use the program it tells us that there is a Story Facts Box at the top right-hand corner of the page, whereas in fact it's at the left.

These little blips are easy to get over, however, and do not detract from the product.

The program gets you to answer questions about your various characters, and I found the questions to be very inspiring. For instance, I had never considered what my protagonist (in the test novel) did in her spare time, and answering that question gave me some really good ideas for the complexity of the novel.

You have to decide ahead of time what genre your novel is in. This is a very good idea anyway - you should know what genre your novel is, both to help you write it to that genre's conventions and also to help you sell it in due course. And to help you there is a list of twelve major genres, such as action/adventure, romance, mystery, suspense.

And within each of those is an extremely comprehensive list of sub-genres. For example, within the 'mystery' genre you can have: academic, African American, amateur detective/sleuth, American cozy, animal-centered, antiques, archeological, art - and that's just the A's!

My challenge was in figuring out exactly which genre my novel fell into. I would have very much appreciated more information on each genre in order to better identify my story.

So, once you have filled out all the questions you go back to the template section. Based on the information you have given the software will have drawn up a set of action/reaction sections.

You just have to fill out what happened in each section. It prompts you for all the information you need to share. What it asks depends on which section of the story you're at.

Once you have filled out all the template sections you will have a detailed and comprehensive outline for your novel, which has in it all the elements that Marshall Evans (who, don't forget is a top literary agent) considers essential for a sellable novel.

You then transfer to the manuscript tab, and start writing. Each section has transferred to this tab, so it's all there in front of you. The program even suggests how long the written work should be (based on the genre and word length you've chosen).

So all in all a very well thought out program that takes you by the hand and guides you through a systematic and tightly constructed novel.

Now, having such a strict template would suit some writers more than others. If you find it comforting and empowering to have such a tight blueprint, then I think this is a very good product for you. If you would find it stultifying and as if you're wearing a strait-jacket, then it's not.

Also Marshall Evans is adamant that you have a story with multiple point-of-view characters. (Although each section is written from the point of view of one character.)

That uncompromising structure was my only complaint (apart from the little errors) that I have with this product. It's a big one for me, but if that structure would aid you and you would be happy to amend your story to fit it, then it would be well worth checking it out.

Here's what other uses have had to say about the Marshall Plan Novel Writing Software:

I bought the software with some reservation since I am a hands on writer who prefers to work with hard copies of everything. But when I started using the software to outline a novel that was going nowhere, and had subplots all over the place, evertyhing cam together. It took me some time to work through all the sections but it made writing the first draft so much smoother to do. For anyone who wants to plot a tight novel, where all the scenes drift into place like a baby into her mother’s arms, try this software. It made me a better and happier writer.

I’m really surprised at how much The Marshall Plan has helped me. I am no longer intimidated by the task of structuring a novel. I’ve read dozens of writing books and magazine articles, and have taken courses as well. Unfortunately, none have come close to revealing the true process. The Marshall Plan is different. It teaches you how to create a custom blueprint for your novel by guiding you through word counts, plot points and the handling of multiple viewpoints. The process is nowhere near as complicated as many would have you think. It simply takes a tool like The Marshall Plan to walk you through it. Thanks, Martha and Evan! The secret has finally been revealed and it’s given me the confidence to start writing again.

When it comes time to putting everything down on paper, nothing is better than The Marshall Plan. The software is intuitive, non-threatening, and easy to use. And the blueprint Evan Marshall has developed for creating your story (and it’s characters) is both logical and practical. Combine all this with Evan’s down-to-earth tips and common sense recommendations — your best seller practically writes itself. (Well, almost.) It doen’t try to think for you. It still lets you do the dreaming. But when it comes time to putting those dreams on paper, nothing beats the Marshall Plan.
