Detailed Review:

NewNovelist 3.0 is one of the more established novel writing software products, and has many thousands of customers. 

Unlike WriteItNow4 or yWriter5, this is not so much an information management product. Rather it's about helping you to tell the story. It gives a very specific format for you to follow; one based around the classic Hero's Journey.

You start off by picking a title (it can be a working title; you can change it any time) and a one-line summary of your story. You then decide which of three categories your novel falls into: plot-driven, character-driven, or epic. The software guides you slightly differently depending on your choice, so it's important. I confess I found it difficult to decide which option my novel was, and there wasn't much help to decide. This, to me, was a real stumbling block to getting to grips with this product. I think that if they just provided more detailed help in identifying which category my novel fell into, I would have found the NewNovelist a lot easier to use than I did.

NewNovelist then guides you to develop your characters, and also your locations and any specific tools your characters will use. These options are really handy - I especially like the idea of taking the time to create your locations. I'm not sure how much use the 'tools' option is, unless you're writing in fantasy where tools or objects can have a huge impact on the story. It would help you to remember what exactly Potion X does!

And then NewNovelist guides you to draw up bullet points of the various developments in your story, based, as I said, around the hero's journey. So a section on: 'hero at home' (i.e. the 'ordinary world'), hero is presented with a problem, here meets a mentor and so on, following the hero's journey, as your protagonist takes his or her quest throughout the novel. This gives you the outline of your novel.
